The OCT scan and retinal photograph are taken together as one optional extra test, which we recommend only when it will show us something the examination alone can't. It isn't part of the comprehensive examination fee, and we always quote the $60 before going ahead.

In some circumstances a $34.00 rebate applies instead, which leaves an out-of-pocket cost of $66.00 (standard) or $51.00 (pension card). We book 45 to 60 minutes for a comprehensive eye examination at Holland Park Eyecare. That's longer than a standard appointment, on purpose. It gives us time to test properly, explain what we find, answer your questions and talk through any glasses or treatment options without rushing you.

Yes, in many cases. We'll check that your frames are in good condition and that their shape suits your prescription. If they do, we're happy to fit Rodenstock lenses to them. Just bring them in and we'll take a look.

We recommend children have their first comprehensive eye exam before they start school, at around age 4 or 5. Kids often don't know what normal vision looks like, so a lot of vision problems in children go unnoticed. Conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn) and short-sightedness have much better outcomes when they're picked up early. Our clinic is child-friendly and we're used to seeing young patients.

B.I.G. (Biometric Intelligent Glasses) is Rodenstock's lens personalisation technology, used in their B.I.G. VISION™ lenses. For most adults with no existing conditions, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam every two years. If you have diabetes, a risk of glaucoma, a strong prescription or a family history of eye disease, we recommend a check every year. Children and people over 65 also benefit from more frequent checks. We'll tell you the right interval at your appointment.

Yes. We fit all the major types of contact lenses: daily disposables, monthly lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, and multifocal contact lenses. A fitting includes a trial pair and a follow-up visit to check your comfort and vision. We'll also go through how long to wear them and how to look after them.

No. You don't need a referral to see an optometrist, so you can book with us directly. If your examination shows something that needs an ophthalmologist, we'll refer you and send a detailed clinical summary to the specialist.

An OCT (optical coherence tomography) scan builds a cross-section of your retina, so we can see its layers and measure how thick they are instead of only looking at the surface. Our scanner takes a retinal photograph at the same time, so you get both from the one capture. An OCT isn't part of every eye examination. We recommend one when it will show us something a standard examination can't: for example if you have a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, an optic nerve or macula we want a closer look at, or a finding we're monitoring over time. If we think a scan is worthwhile, we'll explain why and tell you what it costs before we do it.

No. Medicare doesn't rebate OCT imaging in optometry, so it's a private fee of $60. That covers the OCT scan and the retinal photograph for both eyes. The two are taken together in one capture and are never charged separately. The fee is separate from your consultation and doesn't affect the Medicare rebate on your examination. We always quote the $60 before going ahead.
