Do you bulk bill?

We bulk bill all children under 18. Pension Card holders are eligible for a reduced consultation fee — $85 for a comprehensive eye examination (normally $100) and $51 for a subsequent or brief consultation (normally $60). For all other patients, we are a private billing practice: a professional fee applies and your Medicare rebate is processed on the day via our HICAPS terminal.

How much will I get back from Medicare?

Most patients receive a $67.85 rebate for a comprehensive eye examination and $34.00 for a subsequent consultation. Out-of-pocket costs are $32.15 for comprehensive and $26.00 for subsequent (standard patients), or $17.15 and $17.00 for Pension Card holders. Rebates are processed on the day via our HICAPS terminal — most patients receive their rebate instantly, though it can take up to 24 hours.

How long is a typical appointment?

A comprehensive eye examination at Holland Park Eyecare is allocated 45–60 minutes. This is significantly longer than a standard appointment, and intentionally so. We use that time to conduct thorough testing, explain what we find, answer your questions, and discuss any eyewear or treatment options — without any rush.

Can I bring my own frames for new lenses?

Yes, in many cases. We can assess whether your existing frames are in good condition and have a suitable shape for your prescription. If your frames are compatible, we're happy to supply Rodenstock lenses for them. Just bring them in and we'll take a look.

What age should my child have their first eye exam?

We recommend children have their first comprehensive eye exam before they start school — around age 4 or 5. Many vision problems in children go undetected because kids often don't know what normal vision looks like. Early detection of conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn), or short-sightedness makes a significant difference to outcomes.

Standard lens values suit only 2% of eyes, so rather than using a one-size-fits-all model, B.I.G. calculates each lens from the individual biometry of your eyes. The result is a lens made specifically for you, not a generic template.

How often should I have an eye exam?

For most adults with no existing conditions, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam every two years. If you have diabetes, glaucoma risk, a strong prescription, or a family history of eye disease, annual exams are recommended. Children and patients over 65 also benefit from more frequent monitoring.

Do you do contact lens fittings?

Yes. We fit all major types of contact lenses including daily disposables, monthly lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, and multifocal contact lenses. A contact lens fitting includes a trial pair and a follow-up to ensure comfort and vision are optimal.

Do I need a referral?

Accepted Answer

No referral is needed to see an optometrist. You can book directly with us. If during your examination we identify something that requires specialist ophthalmology care, we will refer you appropriately and provide a detailed clinical summary for the specialist.
