Book an Eye ExaminationWhat is macular degeneration?
The macula is the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. In AMD, the macula gradually deteriorates — affecting central vision while usually leaving peripheral vision intact.
There are two main types. "Dry" AMD is more common and progresses slowly; "wet" AMD is less common but faster and more serious, and needs prompt treatment to protect vision.
Who is at risk?
Age is the biggest factor, along with family history, high blood pressure, and diet. Smoking is the most significant modifiable risk — stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your macula.
How we detect and monitor it
We examine your macula and retina during a comprehensive exam and look for early changes. Where indicated we take retinal photographs with our in-house retinal camera to document the macula and monitor it over time, and we may give you a simple tool (such as an Amsler grid) to check your own central vision between visits.
How we help, and when we refer
Early detection allows monitoring and lifestyle advice that may help slow progression. If we suspect wet AMD — which needs prompt treatment — we refer urgently to an ophthalmologist, because timely injections can preserve vision. We continue to monitor and co-manage alongside your specialist.
