Book an Eye ExaminationWhat is a cataract?
Behind your pupil sits a clear natural lens that focuses light onto the retina. A cataract is when that lens becomes cloudy, scattering light and blurring your vision. Cataracts are extremely common with age and usually progress slowly over months to years.
Who gets cataracts?
Most cataracts are age-related, but they can develop earlier with diabetes, certain medications (such as long-term steroids), eye injury, smoking, and significant UV exposure over a lifetime.
How we detect cataracts
We examine the lens of your eye during a comprehensive examination and assess how a cataract is affecting your vision and daily life. We explain what we find in plain language and track any changes over time.
How we help, and when we refer
In the early stages, an updated glasses prescription can keep you seeing comfortably. When a cataract begins to interfere with everyday life — driving, reading, or work — the treatment is a straightforward and highly successful day surgery to replace the cloudy lens, performed by an ophthalmologist. We refer you at the right time, provide your clinical details, and look after your vision before and after surgery.
