More than a vision check

A comprehensive eye examination is about far more than reading letters off a chart. At Holland Park Eyecare, every exam assesses both how well you see and how healthy your eyes are — because many eye conditions develop quietly, without obvious symptoms, long before they affect your vision.

We allocate 45 to 60 minutes to every comprehensive exam — significantly longer than a standard appointment. That time lets us test thoroughly, explain our findings in plain language, and answer your questions without any rush.

What your examination includes

Your optometrist will assess your vision and prescription, check how your eyes work together, and examine the health of the eye — including screening for common conditions such as glaucoma, cataract, macular degeneration, and the eye changes associated with diabetes and high blood pressure.

If you need glasses or contact lenses, we'll discuss your options and, where eyewear is required, assess you for Rodenstock B.I.G. VISION™ lenses, calculated from the individual biometry of your eyes.

When should you have an eye exam?

For most adults with no existing conditions, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam every two years. If you have diabetes, a strong prescription, a family history of eye disease, or are over 65, more frequent checks are usually advised.

No referral is needed to see an optometrist — you can book directly with us. If we find something that needs specialist care, we'll refer you and provide a detailed clinical summary.

Common questions

A comprehensive eye examination at Holland Park Eyecare is allocated 45–60 minutes. This is significantly longer than a standard appointment, and intentionally so. We use that time to conduct thorough testing, explain what we find, answer your questions, and discuss any eyewear or treatment options — without any rush.

For most adults with no existing conditions, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam every two years. If you have diabetes, glaucoma risk, a strong prescription, or a family history of eye disease, annual exams are recommended. Children and patients over 65 also benefit from more frequent monitoring. We'll advise you on the right interval at your appointment.

The fees section on this page shows the full breakdown — fee, Medicare rebate, and out-of-pocket cost — for each consultation type. Most patients receive a $67.85 rebate for a comprehensive eye examination and $34.00 for a subsequent consultation. Rebates are processed on the day via our HICAPS terminal — most patients receive their rebate instantly, though it can take up to 24 hours.

No referral is needed to see an optometrist. You can book directly with us. If during your examination we identify something that requires specialist ophthalmology care, we will refer you appropriately and provide a detailed clinical summary for the specialist.
