Understanding dry eye

Dry eye happens when your eyes don't produce enough tears, or when your tears evaporate too quickly. It can cause stinging, grittiness, redness, blurry vision that comes and goes, and — surprisingly — watery eyes. Screen use, contact lenses, air-conditioning, ageing and certain medications can all contribute.

Finding the cause, not just the symptom

Effective treatment starts with understanding why your eyes are dry. Your optometrist will assess your tear film and the surface of your eye to identify the type of dry eye you have, then tailor a management plan to your needs.

A lot of dry eye comes back to the meibomian glands in your eyelids, which keep your tears from evaporating too quickly. Management typically combines lubricant eye drops, lid hygiene (lid wipes and warm compresses), and — where it helps — in-office meibomian gland expression to clear and restart those glands. We review your progress over time, aiming for lasting relief rather than a temporary fix.

When to get help

If dryness or irritation is affecting your comfort, your vision, or your contact lens wear, an assessment is worthwhile. Dry eye is usually very manageable once the underlying cause is understood.

Common questions

A comprehensive eye examination at Holland Park Eyecare is allocated 45–60 minutes. This is significantly longer than a standard appointment, and intentionally so. We use that time to conduct thorough testing, explain what we find, answer your questions, and discuss any eyewear or treatment options — without any rush.

No referral is needed to see an optometrist. You can book directly with us. If during your examination we identify something that requires specialist ophthalmology care, we will refer you appropriately and provide a detailed clinical summary for the specialist.
