What is diabetic eye disease?

Persistently high blood sugar can damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina — a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Left unchecked, these vessels can leak, swell or grow abnormally, threatening vision. Diabetes also raises the risk of other eye problems, including macular oedema, cataracts and glaucoma.

Why regular checks matter

Diabetic retinopathy often causes no symptoms until it is advanced, so you can't rely on how your vision feels. We recommend that people with diabetes have a comprehensive retinal examination at least annually — and more frequently if any changes are detected.

How we check your eyes

During a diabetic eye check we examine your retina thoroughly for signs of damage and, where clinically indicated, take retinal photographs with our in-house retinal camera to document and monitor your eyes over time. We assess both eyes carefully and explain what we find.

How we help, and when we refer

Detecting changes early means they can be acted on before vision is affected. We advise on the check-up interval that's right for you, and if we find sight-threatening changes we refer promptly to an ophthalmologist for treatment such as laser or injections. We coordinate with your GP and specialist as part of your overall diabetes care.
