Myopia Management for Children in Brisbane

Short-sightedness (myopia) tends to progress through childhood. Myopia management aims to slow that progression — protecting your child's long-term eye health, not just updating their glasses each year. Available at our Holland Park West clinic.

Why slowing myopia matters

Myopia, or short-sightedness, usually begins in childhood and tends to worsen as a child grows. Beyond needing stronger glasses each year, higher levels of myopia are associated with a greater long-term risk of eye-health problems later in life.

Myopia management is a proactive approach that aims to slow how quickly short-sightedness progresses, rather than simply correcting it after the fact.

How myopia management works

We manage myopia using two evidence-based options: purpose-built myopia control spectacle lenses, and soft contact lenses designed specifically to slow myopia progression. Both correct your child's vision day to day while helping to slow how quickly their short-sightedness advances. The most suitable option depends on your child's age, prescription and lifestyle.

At your child's appointment, your optometrist will measure their vision and eye health, talk you through which option suits them, and put a monitoring plan in place to track how their myopia changes over time.

The earlier, the better

Acting early gives the best opportunity to influence how myopia develops. If your child is becoming more short-sighted, squinting, or sitting very close to screens and books, it's worth booking an assessment. We bulk bill all children under 18.

Common questions

We recommend children have their first comprehensive eye exam before they start school — around age 4 or 5. Many vision problems in children go undetected because kids often don't know what normal vision looks like. Early detection of conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn), or short-sightedness makes a significant difference to outcomes. Our clinic is child-friendly and experienced with paediatric patients.

No referral is needed to see an optometrist. You can book directly with us. If during your examination we identify something that requires specialist ophthalmology care, we will refer you appropriately and provide a detailed clinical summary for the specialist.
